What Can a Cone Crusher Crush? A Practical Guide to Suitable Materials

Cone crushers are widely used in secondary and tertiary crushing stages in aggregate and mining production lines. Thanks to their interparticle crushing principle and superior wear resistance, they are particularly effective for processing hard, abrasive materials. The main applications can be grouped into four categories:

1. High-hardness rocks

These include granite, basalt, tuff, diabase, gneiss, quartzite, and similar materials. Such rocks have high silica content and strong abrasiveness, which cause severe wear on crushing equipment. Cone crushers, with their durable manganese liners, handle these conditions well. Moreover, the interparticle crushing action helps reduce the proportion of flaky or elongated particles, producing a well-shaped cubical final product.

2. Medium-hardness rocks

For limestone, dolomite, and other rocks with a Mohs hardness of 3-4 or higher and a relatively high silica content, cone crushers can still maintain good throughput. However, if the material is softer (e.g., weathered rock), an impact crusher is often a more cost-effective choice.

3. River pebbles and cobblestones

These stones are naturally smooth, dense, and extremely hard due to prolonged water erosion. Impact or hammer crushers suffer from very rapid wear on their blow bars when processing such materials. In contrast, the combination of squeezing and interparticle crushing in a cone crusher proves to be a more efficient and durable solution.

4. Metal ores

For iron, copper, gold, lead-zinc, aluminum, manganese, nickel, tungsten, molybdenum, and other metal ores, cone crushers are the workhorse for medium and fine crushing. They offer various cavity types to match the “more crushing, less grinding” principle, providing a suitable feed size for downstream grinding. With advanced hydraulic systems, they are well-suited for large-scale, continuous operation in mineral processing, helping to reduce overall energy consumption and operating costs.

In summary, the cone crusher is an ideal choice for hard, abrasive materials and metal ores in secondary and tertiary crushing. For softer or low‑hardness rocks, however, a thorough cost-benefit evaluation is recommended before selecting the appropriate crusher type.
