At a large-scale tungsten mine in Vietnam, the ore is predominantly of the quartz-vein type, characterized by high hardness and large particle sizes. To enhance processing efficiency, the mine established a production line with a capacity of 150 tons per hour. It employs a proven process flow—comprising multi-stage crushing, grinding and classification, gravity concentration, and final purification—consistently achieving a tungsten recovery rate of over 88%.
The primary challenge for this production line stemmed from the raw ores characteristics: the maximum feed size was approximately 400–500 mm, yet the crushed product entering the ball mill had to be strictly controlled to under 12 mm, necessitating an extremely high reduction ratio. To address this, the project utilized a jaw crusher to reduce large ore blocks to under 150 mm, followed by a cone crusher in the fine-crushing stage to further reduce the material to minus 12 mm, thereby establishing a two-stage closed-circuit crushing process. In the subsequent grinding stage, a ball mill and a spiral classifier operate in a closed-circuit loop to ensure uniform grinding fineness, creating optimal conditions for gravity separation using spiral chutes and shaking tables.
This process effectively embodies the energy-saving principle of “more crushing, less grinding.” Since energy consumption in the crushing stage is far lower than in the grinding stage, strictly controlling the crushed product size significantly reduced the load on the ball mill, leading to a marked decrease in the overall electricity and steel consumption of the entire production line.
Today, this project in Vietnam stands as a benchmark for tungsten ore processing; the insights gained regarding equipment selection, process configuration, and energy consumption control offer a practical reference for similar hard-rock mining operations.
